Code Enforcement & Public Safety
The Village of Old Field Code Enforcement Office also serves as the Department of Public Safety. The office, located in the Village Keeper’s House at Old Field Point, operates 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Code enforcement officers patrol the village roads, respond to calls for emergency and safety services, and enforce certain aspects of the Village of Old Field Code. The Village has three marked vehicles (a cruiser, an SUV, and a beach vehicle). All Code Enforcement officers employed by the Village are either current NYS University police officers or retired NYPD or Suffolk County police officers. They are continually trained and updated in current law. In addition, all Code Enforcement officers are trained in the use of the Defibrillator which is carried by the officers at all times.

Village Roadways & Right of Way
Work in the Village of Old Field is performed under permit pursuant to the provisions of the Old Field Village Code. Permits must always be prominently displayed at the work site. Work can be performed by contractors from Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM. There is no work permitted on Sundays or legal holidays. Inspections of all work sites is done on an ongoing basis by Code Enforcement officers. Residents may call the Code Enforcement Office for additional information. Village Roadways & Right of Way
The right of way adjacent to the pavement of Village roads extends 10 feet beyond the pavement edge on each side of the roadway, or 25 feet from the center of the roadway, and/or as noted on your survey. The Village strives to keep these areas free of obstructions so as to help assure vehicular and pedestrian safety, visibility, and access for emergency vehicles. Residents should, therefore, refrain from planting in these areas and/or placing any obstructions (i.e., rocks, boulders, statuary, trees, etc.).
Signs
No commercial signs (including vendor signs when they are performing work) are allowed in the Village of Old Field. One temporary realty sign per property (house or lot) is permitted.
- The maximum size is 18" x 18".
- Only the words “For Sale” of “For Rent” and “By Owner” are allowed.
- The name and/or address of the owner are not permitted.
- It may have only one phone number, that of the owner or realtor.
- Numbers and letters must be black on white background.
- The sign must not be illuminated.
- It must be placed only on private property, not in Village intersections or on the Village right of way.
Special event signs may not exceed 2' x 2'. They may be posted ½ hour before the even and must be removed promptly at its conclusion.

Safety Checks
Officers perform house checks at the resident’s request when they are away on vacation for an extended period of time. The forms for the Request for House Checks can be downloaded from this website or obtained from the Code Enforcement Office. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this service which provides an extra level of security for residents absent from their homes for an extended period of time.
Police Emergencies
Residents are advised that, in a police emergency situation, they should contact the Suffolk County Police Department by dialing 911.
Give your NAME, ADDRESS, NEAREST CROSS STREET, and PHONE NUMBER. Stay on the phone and listed for all directions. In a police emergency, your first telephone call should be to 911. Old Field is located within the Sixth District of the Suffolk County Police Department. The Suffolk County Police Department Website is www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police.
Fire & Medical Emergencies
In the case of either a medical emergency or a fire, residents should contact the Setauket Fire District by dialing 941-4441. The Setauket Fire District strongly advised that you call them directly at the above number rather than calling 911. Give your NAME, ADDRESS, NEAREST CROSS STREET, and PHONE NUMBER. Stay on the phone and listen for all directions. In the case of a fire or other physical emergency, GET ALL INDIVIDUALS OUT OF THE HOUSE and be prepared to direct responding officers. DO NOT GO BACK INTO THE RESIDENCE. In a medical or fire emergency, your first telephone call should be to 941-4441. The Setauket Fire District Website is www.setauketfd.com.
Speed Limit
The speed limit is 30 MPH on all Village roads except Crane Neck Road which has a speed limit of 25 MPH. The Suffolk County Police Department enforces these speed limits. The speed limit on the waterways (Conscience Bay and the Narrows) is 5 MPH.
Parking
No parking is allowed on Village roadsides at any time. Residents may obtain special permission for party guest parking by contacting the Village Code Enforcement Office at (631) 941-9401 or the Village Clerk at (631) 941-0412. Residents are requested to advise all landscaping and other vendors to park in private driveways whenever possible or, if not possible, as far off the Village roadways as possible.
Residents are encouraged to secure Village of Old Field parking stickers from Village Hall and affix them to all automobiles. These stickers will help our Code Enforcement Officers identify Village resident automobiles.
Safety Tips
The Village Code Enforcement Office provides the following safety tips:
- Keep bushes and hedges trimmed and not blocking windows or obstructing views.
- Keep a light on by the entrance to your house or have light motion sensors in place.
- If, upon returning home, you find your door ajar or unlocked do not enter your home but call 911. Do not enter your home.
- Make sure all alarm systems and smoke monitors are utilized and keep all security codes private.
- Keep all cars in the garage or locked if parked in the driveway.
- If in doubt of vendors, phone company personnel, LIPA, or other visitors ask for proper identification. Do not open the door if your request is denied. If necessary, call the Village Code Enforcement Officer or 911.
- Be sure to stop all deliveries (including mail and newspaper) if you plan to be absent for an extended period. Make sure to fill out a Request for House Check.
